Champ-Classic-Logo.pngThe Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau Sports Alliance's 2013 Action Sports Medicine Champions Classic will bring two exciting high school football games to Abilene on Zero Week, Aug. 29-30, as the Anson Tigers and Hamlin Pied Pipers kick off Thursday and the Abilene High Eagles host the Lewisville Hebron Hawks on Friday.

The opening game will feature two playoff-tested Big Country teams in what should be a hard-fought contest. Anson, 10-2 last season, out of District 4-1A, Division I, was an area finalist in 2012 and returns a whopping 17 starters.

Hamlin, 9-4 last season, out of District 7-1A, Division II, was a regional semifinalist and returns 14 starters - 7 each on both offense and defense.

Abilene High won the tough District 2-5A last season with a perfect 8-0 record. Though the Eagles only return 6 starters, the squad will feature 29 returning lettermen. This will mark the 8th appearance in the annual event. Last year's 26-8 win over Duncanville in the Classic was historic for Coach Steve Warren - it was his 150th victory.

Hebron was a bi-district finalist out of 5-5A last season and returns 38 lettermen and 10 starters. The Hawks have gained a reputation over the past several seasons as being quite the defensive juggernaut. So the matchup with the Eagles should be an instant classic.

The Classic is promoted by the Sports Alliance Committee of the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau, which is an affiliate of the Abilene Chamber of Commerce. The Sports Alliance was formed to increase the economic impact in the Abilene community through sporting events. One goal is to raise money for scholarships awarded each year to graduating seniors from each of the local high schools. To date, the Champions Classic has awarded $70,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors from Abilene High, Cooper High, Wylie High and Abilene Christian High schools.
