Big Brothers Big Sisters Abilene Celebrates 40th Anniversary during National Mentoring Month

Abilene, TX – January 9, 2018

January 2018 marks the start of Big Brothers Big Sisters Abilene’s 40th year of providing children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally-supported mentoring relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. Big Brothers Big Sisters Abilene (BBBS) is celebrating National Mentoring Month in January as well.

National Mentoring Month is a large-scale public awareness campaign and provides a wonderful opportunity for BBBS, as the largest mentoring organization in the country, to attract attention to the value of mentoring, recruit mentors and generate contributions.

Mark Rogers has been the BBBS Abilene Market President since 2016. “I get to see the enormous impact our organization makes every day. It’s not just the Littles whose lives are changed. I’ve heard countless stories from our Bigs about how volunteering in our program has changed their lives as well. Mentoring matters, and despite another great year in 2017, we still have so many kids in our community that need a positive role model,” he says.

“In 2017, BBBS of Abilene served 570 children. Our goal for 2018 is to serve 635 children. We currently have 167 kids on our waiting list ready to be matched with a mentor. Our hope for National Mentoring Month and our 40th anniversary is to increase the impact we have on children facing adversity in Abilene.” explains Megan Tolle, BBBS Director of Public Relations and Recruiting.

In celebration of its 40th anniversary and National Mentoring Month, BBBS will be hosting an event on January 25th at 547 Chestnut Street. The event will begin with an open house at 5:30pm followed by a program and awards ceremony at 6:00pm. The public is welcome to attend.

One way individuals can help BBBS Abilene raise awareness of mentoring’s importance is by celebrating #ThankYourMentor Day on January 25th . To participate, thank someone you consider a mentor or share what mentoring means to you in a social media post that day and use the hashtag #ThankYourMentor and #bbbsabilene. BBBS Abilene hopes that current and potential mentors will be encouraged as they are reminded of the power of mentoring in the local media as well.
