2nd Suspect to be Sentenced for "Worst Case" CPS Worker Has Ever Seen

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - A second suspect connected to the "worst case" of child abuse a local CPS worker says she's ever seen will be sentenced in July.

James Mayhall, 50, gave an open plea in court on Wednesday for an Injury to a Child case he was arrested for in February of 2016. Mayhall will be sentenced for the crime on July 7, 2017.

Mayhall's wife, Evangelia Mayhall, 39, was sentenced to serve 50 years behind bars after she was convicted on a 1st Degree Felony Injury to a Child charge during a trial in March. She was also ordered to pay a $5,000 fine.

A CPS worker took the stand during day two of Mayhall's trial to give testimony on "one of the worst cases she'd ever seen".

The CPS worker said that when she saw the baby while conducting an investigation for the Child Protective Services it "didn't even look human". She also described the state of the Mayhall home, which was occupied by Mayhall, her husband James, two children, and two other adults.

Both Mayhalls were arrested for Injury to a Child in February of 2016. Two other adult residents living with the Mayhalls - Justin Heiser and Breanna Morris - were also arrested and charged with Endangering a Child by Omission in connection to this child abuse case.

CPS and the Abilene Police Department began investigating the Mayhalls after the baby was rushed to the emergency room in January of 2016.

She weighed only 6 lbs, 5 oz when she was removed from the home and taken to the emergency room. The physician who assisted in her birth says she weighed 6 lbs, 15 oz when she was born.

The emergency room physician did say the child was "in danger of dying at the time of her admission to the hospital," according to the documents.
