3rd Young Student "Cannot Recover" from Fatal Haskell County Crash

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - Another member of the Vernon College Rodeo team is suspected to succumb to injuries sustained during a crash in Haskell Saturday night.

Family members of Jakob Plummer wrote the following message on social media regarding his current condition:

"I'm writing this update with a very heavy heart but we want each of Jakob's friends to know the truth, from us. The MRI was devastating. The EEG confirmed what the doctors told us. The injury to his brain was in the brain stem between the two lobes. There isn't swelling or bleeding we're waiting on, the nerves are just ripped apart. Three different surgeons agree he cannot recover from this. We are completely heartbroken and unsure how to move on without our Jake, but have comfort knowing he will be reunited with his mother after the last 9 years without her. He's on a ventilator for another day or 2 until family members can arrive. All we know is God has heard our prayers and is answering them in a different way than we have hoped. We know one day we will see Him face to face and hopefully be able to make sense of this. Until then, we ask for prayers of comfort and peace."

Two other young lives were lost during the crash that happened on  U.S. 277 just north of Haskell around 6:30 p.m.

Vernon College Rodeo team member, Yanice Wade McCuistion, 19, was pronounced dead at the scene and Vernon College student Vinita Jean Trevino, 19, of Petrolia, died in the hospital later that night.

A fourth student involved in the crash, Drew Hall, is still recovering. His current condition is not known at this time.

The cause of the fatal crash is still under investigation, but a press release from the Texas Department of Public Safety says McCuistion, the driver of the students' vehicle, disregarded a stop sign, causing a truck pulling a mobile home to impact their vehicle.

The 73-year-old driver of the truck was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
