Facebook is celebrating its 10th birthday Tuesday. In the past decade, the site has grown from serving university students to billions of people around the world.

According to Pew Research, one out of every six people uses Facebook worldwide. That's roughly $1.2 billion active monthly users.

Other statistics show that there are 6 billion "likes" per day and that 350 million photos are uploaded every day. The U.S. leads the pack with more than $125 million users.

In Abilene, businesses say they've utilized Facebook to their advantage. Mad Coffee & More opened on September and has been using Facebook as a form of free advertisement.

"We take pictures of our products and store and post it on our page so people who haven't been inside can know what to expect," co-owner Laura Barker said.

Beehive Restaurant & Saloon not only post menu items on their page, but use customer comments to their advantage.

"It's great to see the positive feedback but it's the negative ones that we pay attention to," Chef Junior Maldonado says. "We use them to improve our restaurant."

Majority of people in the Big Country favor Facebook for allowing them to re-connect with others around the world. It has also been used to communicate in classrooms.

"Some of my professors would use Facebook to send messages to their students pertaining to the subject," ACU senior Madison Dampier says.

Many argue that Facebook hinders proper communication skills. Last year, people checked their Facebook more on their phones than their desktop computers.
