Abilene City Council approved an agreement with a consulting company to analyze the needs of the current public safety communication system.

Both city officials and law enforcement officers agree that the updates are necessary.

According to Assistant Chief Doug Wrenn, it won't be long before Microsoft stops supporting Windows XP, which in turn, the stat of Texas will not be able to certify information from the outdated system.

"In addition to software issues, we also have interoperability issues with the radio frequencies," Assistant Chief Doug Wrenn said.

The results of the analysis are expected in 60 to 90 days. The analysis will cost no more than 80,000 dollars.
