An Abilene native stepped up to support two local families dealing with illness.

Jessica Cortez traveled from Houston back to her hometown of Abilene to host a fundraiser this weekend. The event was to benefit two families whose teenage child are battling illnesses.

She raised funds for a 16-year-old Abilene High football player whose life recently changed when his kidneys failed. The teen is currently at Cook Children's Medical Center in Forth Worth on dialysis. The other family's 18-year-old son was recently diagnosed with cancer and it is undergoing chemotherapy.

Jessica's garage sale fundraiser brought in about $400. If you would like to donate, an account has been set up at Abilene Federal Credit union under Yvonne Terrazas.
