Children born to obese mothers are a third more likely to die at a young age than those with normal weight moms.

Researchers in the U.K. followed the health of more than 30,000 people born between 1950 and 1976.

They found those whose mothers were obese when they got pregnant were significantly more likely to die before age 55, and the most common cause was heart disease.

They were also more likely to be hospitalized later in life for heart-related conditions.

Researchers say the long-term effects of maternal obesity are probably greater now because it is much more common.
