Drive-in theater says business is doing well after switch to digital

Earlier this year, Abilene's only drive-in theater made the decision between going digital or closing its doors.

With support from the community and enough finances to back the project, the theater got a major facelift. From the ticket booth to the concession stand, business is booming at the Town & Country Drive-In.

Saturday nights are the busiest, but the business says you may get caught up in the line of headlights at the entrance on Fridays. According to manager Ray Andress, they're seeing more cars line up.

It may have something to do with what lies behind each control room door. A few months ago, the landmark theater got a modern upgrade. They swapped out the outdated film projectors for digital ones. It's a change Andress says was inevitable.

"Typically, when a business upgrades to new equipment, the customer pays the price, but not here" Andress said. "Since switching over to digital screens, the price here at the concession stand and at the ticket booth have remained the same."

Going completely digital wasn't cheap but Andress says the business that's been around since 1956 can still compete with lager movie chains.
