Abilene Police are actively investigating a wreck that sent one person to a Lubbock hospital in critical condition early Saturday morning.

The wreck occurred in the 3500 block of Ambler Ave. around 1:45 a.m. Saturday.

According to police, an officer saw the vehicle run a red light and before he was able to stop them, the driver sped off.

The officer then drove up on the crash scene and found that the vehicle had lost control and slammed into a utility pole, shearing the base.

Rescue crews had to use the jaws of life to free the driver from the wreckage.

He was taken to Hendrick Medical Center with critical injuries, then flown to a Lubbock hospital.

At this point, police said they did not know if alcohol played a role in the crash.
