Michael McFaul, 28, has been a truck driver for three years. On August 29, McFaul was involved in fiery semi-truck rollover accident in Atlanta and suffered third degree burns.
For four months, doctors have operated 20 surgeries on McFaul since 80% of his body is burned. They also had to amputate some of his fingers and treat infections he received due to exposed flesh.
Doctors said mortality rate was 75%, according to McFaul's grandfather James McFaul.
McFaul's grandparents live in Roscoe and his sister is an elementary school teacher in Sweetwater.
"I've been traveling back and forth to see McFaul," Jennifer Withrow, McFaul's older sister said. "It's one of those things you would never expect to happen to your family."
Their parents live in Weatherford and have also been traveling to and fro Atlanta. According to updates, McFaul can finally nod his head and wiggle some fingers. Doctors tell the family that he's able to respond but recovery is a long way to go.
"He's going to have to learn how to walk, talk, and use his hands again," Withrow said.
As a way to raise money to support rehabilitation and reconstructive surgery, McFaul's family teamed up with local churches and businesses to host several fundraisers.
On Saturday, family and friends held a bake sale, a Walk for the Burn, brisket supper and a silent auction. At the end of the day, they raised $5,000.
"We couldn't be more thankful for the support," McFaul's grandfather said. "You really know who is part of your community when they show that much love."
According to Withrow, they hope to transfer her brother to Texas by February and put together more fundraisers around that time. She will spend Christmas alongside her brother in the hospital.
For anyone interested in helping, there's a benefit account set up in McFaul's honor at First Financial Bank in Sweetwater, TX Acct# 10110072955. All the money donated will be used for medical expenses and travel for the family.
