At around 5:30 a.m., firefighters in Eastland County responded to a call of a major fire on Avenue K and West 5th St. The building was the old Brown's Sanatorium, according to neighbors.
The high winds were fueling the fire and freezing temperatures made it difficult for firefighters to work.
To some, the sanatorium was a landmark and held meaning. Cynthia Hayes visited her daughter in Cisco to help with Christmas decorations. Hayes said she woke up to sirens and soon learned that the sanatorium was the same facility her father was a patient in decades ago.
"It was an emotional thing to watch knowing that the sanatorium was the landmark where my father was for 6 months," Hayes said.
Other neighbors say the wind blew embers on houses two blocks away.
There is no word on what caused the fire, and the case has been passed on for the State Fire Marhsal to investigate. The building was abandoned and had no active utilities, says Fire Chief Walter Fairbanks.
The fire was extinguished around 1 p.m., about eight hours after the call was made.
