Friday Night Football Means Big Business

It's football Friday. Before those Friday night lights come on, the economic impact is felt across town.
No matter the night's match-up, one thing is certain about football fans on game days: there's a slim chance they're eating at home. Because of that, local restaurant owners expect more customers and a larger profit than on other weeknights.

Sharon Riley owns both 'Sharon's Barbeque' and 'Lytle, Land & Cattle Co'. Both restaurants are in close proximity to Shotwell Stadium. And before fans pack the stands for Friday night football, they fill local restaurants like Riley's first.

"It's very good for business. It adds a lot of the bottom line because it brings people in from out of town, and we like out-of-town dollars," says Sharon Riley.

High school football isn't only big business for local restaurants. But Debi Schultz with the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau says it's added revenue for the town as well. 

"We put an economic impact number of $15 a person and that's usually attributed to a meal, gas, shopping," says Debi Schultz.

That's during the playoff season, but, at times, rounds out to be the same during the regular season. especially when local college football teams are on the ticket.

"We really do get some economic impact there. Typically, anywhere from 13,000 to 20,000 dollars on a day or two."
