New research suggests a Mediterranean-style diet can benefit the health of young, working Americans.

Previous studies have shown that this diet, which is rich in fish, nuts, fruits, and vegetables, lowers cardiovascular risks. However most included in the study are older or have health problems.

To assess the diet's effect on a younger, healthier population, researchers analyzed data on a group of firefighters in the Midwest.

Those who followed the diet closely were 35% less likely to have metabolic syndrome and 43% less likely to have weight gain than those who did not follow the diet.
