The Hardin-Simmons football team continues to mourn the loss of one of their own.

Taylor Huff, 21, died early Sunday morning after he was struck by a 19-year old driver on the 100 block of Ambler Avenue. The HSU Cowboys just won 73-44 against Texas Lutheran the day before.

Head coach Jesse Burleson held a press conference Monday morning with two teammates saying they are taking the loss day by day.

"We're shocked and sad," Burleson said. "We're trying to stick together right now because it's a tough time."

The team already met around 2:45 p.m. Sunday to show support. Some of the teammates describe Huff as someone with a lot of energy and would make people laugh.

"He was always the guy that came to work with a sense of pride and passion," wide receiver Colton Brewer said.

Huff was a senior and wide receiver (#7) majoring in exercise science. He came from Arlington where his parents reside. He was also involved in the Male to Man leadership program at HSU hosted by associate professor of theology, Dr. Kelvin Kelley.

"At first I would describe him as a quiet and reserved guy," Dr. Kelly says. "But overtime, he gained enough confidence to open up intentionally with his relationships."

Many of the players say Huff took on a leadership role.

"He was a leader, he wanted to help people, and better their lives," adds quarterback Josh Christian.

The investigation of the accident is ongoing but police say evidence indicated that Huff was walking on the south side of Ambler, in the outside lane, when he was hit by a vehicle traveling east bound. The report also states that Huff was wearing dark clothing and that there were no signs the driver was intoxicated.  Huff was pronounced dead at the scene.

Memorial service arrangements for Huff have been set for 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14 at the Church on Rush Creek:
Green Oaks Campus.
