Hwy 351 & I-20 Intersection to Close, Causing Detours and Delays This Weekend

ABILENE, Texas (PRESS RELEASE) – The intersection of SH 351 and I-20 will be closed April 28-30 while contractors demolish the westbound I-20 bridge. During this time, traffic traveling southwest (towards Ambler) will be diverted along the westbound I-20 frontage road to FM 600 to cross over I-20 and continue on the eastbound service road to access Ambler.

Traffic traveling northeast (towards SH 351 from Ambler) will be diverted along the eastbound frontage road to Loop 322, cross under I-20 and travel the westbound frontage road to access SH 351.

This intersection will be re-opened to traffic after April 30 but variable, intermittent closures will be necessary throughout the project. The same detour will be in place each time this intersection is closed while crew members work on the I-20 bridges.

Additionally, contractors are installing a concrete surface on SH 351 under I-20 to improve the durability of the intersection. This phase of the project is expected to be completed towards the end of the summer, after which time the interstate frontage roads will return to two lanes on each side.

Drivers are encouraged to allow for extra time to reach their destination while this project is ongoing. Motorists should be especially watchful for unexpected lane changes or closures, crew members and large, heavy equipment in this and all work zones.

The $14,639,000 contract was awarded to Webber, LLC, of The Woodlands, Texas. This project also will include installation of metal beam guard fence, concrete pavement, illumination, signage, and pavement markings. The expected completion date for this project is Spring 2019.

TxDOT routinely inspects state-maintained bridges to ensure that design and structural requirements are met. Upon inspection of these bridges, it was determined that the structures were due to be replaced and upgraded to meet modern design standards.
