Jury selection began early Friday morning for the Tiffany Klapheke trial.

Around 600 summons were sent out for this trial, far exceeding the usual 250.

Before selection began Friday, about half of those summoned had already called in or written asking to be excused.

In total, 251 potential jurors showed up at the Taylor County Courthouse Friday morning. Of those, 96 will be randomly chosen by a computer.

The 96 will then fill out a questionnaire and return on Monday.

Klapheke is charged with three counts of injury to a child. In August of 2012, her 22-month-old, Tamryn Klapheke, died from severe neglect. Her other two children had to be taken to the hospital for chemical burns and dehydration, also caused by neglect.

The trial begins Monday, January 27.
