100+ Local Kids Waiting for a "Big"

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Abilene currently has 122 children on its waiting list, who want to be matched with an Abilene volunteer.

In 2010, 933 children received mentoring through the program.

Big Brothers Big Sisters has two volunteer mentoring opportunities – the Lunch Buddy program, which matches up adults with students who eat lunch together at school once a week, and the community-based program, which encourages one-on-one contact four hours a month.

One of those volunteers, KRBC anchor/reporter Brittany Pelletz, has been involved with the local organization for two years.

"I thought it would be the perfect way to help out a young girl and meet a new friend," she said.

January is designated as National Mentoring Month.

"Children who are mentored through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program are less likely to use drugs or alcohol, less likely to be involved in violence, and less likely to skip school," spokesperson Jamie Bearden said.
