Around 1 p.m. on Wednesday, the Abilene Fire Department responded to a two alarm fire in the 1500 block of Locust in South Abilene. Homeowner, Yolanda Gwinn recalls how she found about the fire that destroyed her home. "My husband called me at work and said our house is on fire, so I told the ladies I work with that my house is on fire, I need to leave".

Yolanda's neighbor, Manuel Perez, is the one who called her husband to let him know about the fire. "I just called him up, you better get home, your house is on fire," explained Perez.

Perez was in the kitchen of his home next door when he heard a loud noise. "It just went up like 'boom'... it rocked my windows in my house so I knew it had to be bad."

Although over half of the house is completely burned, Perez is thankful his long time neighbors were not home at the time. "I am glad nobody was home, Yolanda and the baby, they have been my neighbors for so long, I am really glad nobody was home."

The Gwinns have many memories in the home that they built from the ground up in 1989.

"It has lots of good memories for a lot of people... I raised half of the neighborhood here, I used to have a daycare here and I raised half the neighborhood here" explains Yolanda.

Yolanda says she is not sure of their next step. "It will all sink in later."

However, she is sure that it will all be okay soon. "I have a very supportive family, both a literal family and a spiritual family, so we will be fine."

One person was treated for smoke inhalation on the scene, but no one else was injured in the fire.
