The Abilene Zoo is looking for nature-lovers with time and talents to share.

Volunteers always are needed to help with education, administration, animal and plant care.

Some volunteers may learn how to handle and present animals at zoo events. Other volunteer opportunities include serving as a zoo guest ambassador, teaching guests about the zoo's animal collection and assisting guests when they have questions.

For the more science-minded, the education department needs volunteers to help with materials and research, such as the cataloging of supplies and educational materials.

The horticulture and maintenance departments also are very active and in need of helpers for routine and preventative maintenance of the gardens and facilities.

Animal lovers may want to volunteer for with mammals, reptiles or the commissary -- where daily meals are prepared for the zoo's large collection.

An informational meeting will be presented Tuesday, Aug. 19, at 6 p.m. to tell potential volunteers about these opportunities. Come to the Abilene Zoo's administration building. Light refreshments will be served.
