For Abilene High and head coach Steve Warren, the more things change, the more they stay the same. The UIL is keeping the Little Southwest Conference together for 2 more years, with the exception of Cooper. Many thought Abilene High would be shipped out East like they were the last time the AISD schools were separated, but that is not the case. The new District 3-6A is made of the Eagles, Midland High, Midland Lee, Odessa High, Permian, and San Angelo Central.
Coach Warren said, "We are excited about that. You know, there's always apprehension, you know, breaking up from all the tradition's that you've been a part of for so long, and that's what happened back in '08, and we were apprehensive that that would happen, again, but, low and behold, it did not. It made for some scheduling nightmares because we kind of thought we were gonna go east. We had really heard a lot of things that might indicate that, but at the end of the day, we didn't. We were able to get a schedule put together and here we go."
The Cooper Cougars are headed north and west like head coach Todd Moebes thought they might. The Cougars are dropping to the new Class 5A where they will be one of the biggest schools in the state. Cooper is riding a streak of 7 straight appearances in the state and will be the favorite to win the district in football. Their new district consists of Lubbock High, Lubbock Cooper, who is moving up a classification, Plainview and San Angelo Lake View.
Cooper head coach Todd Moebes said, There are still west Texas ties and West Texas traditions. That's very, very special. It certainly keeps West Texas football out here, and it's something that is very, very special to us. It's going to be a challenge. There's no doubt. It's going to be a long season. You've got 4 district games to play, and every single one of them count."
And for those of you who are wondering, Cooper and Abilene High will play the Crosstown Showdown. The non-district game is tentatively scheduled for Week 3. The 2 schools have split the last 4 contests for the city championship.
