Avoiding the "Back to School Plague"

The halls are empty now, but next week at this time, school will be in session.

While students crowd campus, they'll be sharing a lot more than just summer stories.

"When you get large groups of children together, they're going to share, and one of the things they share is their germs," says Bonnie Stanke, registered nurse at Hendrick Medical Center.

Stanke works in the ER, and says it's common for kids to battle a "back to school plague" of sorts.

"When you're not exposed to it, then you don't have that immunity. But after you get exposed, you start building up your immunities," Stanke explains.

In order to combat the germs, Stanke recommends parents do a little homework of their own.

"Make sure they eat good, nutritious meals, get plenty of sleep, and get lots of rest, because there is lots of activity and stress on them with school. They need that rest so they can build up their immune system to fight off disease," Stanke tells us.

While students and parents are busy getting school supplies ready for the first day back, Stanke says a clean bill of health should be at the top of the list.
