Citizens Reminded to register Storm Shelters

The City of Abilene and Taylor County remind citizens to register their storm shelter/safe room/basement in a free and voluntary program available to all residents. Data collected will provide emergency responders with a database of storm shelter/safe room/basement locations within the City of Abilene and Taylor County. Information gathered will be accessible only to emergency responders and will not be shared or distributed for any other reason. Citizens need to register their location only once; annual registration is not required.

Valuable information on the database such as shelter address, shelter type and shelter location on the property can help emergency agencies locate and assist residents who may have become trapped inside their shelters due to falling debris, structure collapse or other emergency situations.

The Storm Shelter Registration program was launched in June 2013.

To register, citizens can go to the City’s website, and look under "I Want To…" then click on "Register My Storm Shelter."

Citizens can also register by visiting the Taylor County website, and look under "Government Offices," "Emergency Mgmt. & Environmental Enforcement," then click on "Storm Shelter Registration."

Those who need assistance completing the form may contact 211Texas by dialing 2-1-1 or 325-673-8211 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
