Many companies have banned smoking on the premises. In fact, some employers say you won't be considered for a job, even if you only light up in the privacy of your own home.
Some say the policy shift highlights a company's focus on health and wellness--both setting an example, and reigning in employee healthcare costs.
At some companies, current employees who use tobacco or e-cigarettes, have to pay a $20 surcharge each month for health coverage.
Such a policy is well within the rights of a private company. But employers admit, it may end up scaring off good candidates.
You may ask how the company would police this? New applicants would be screened for nicotine in their system, as part of the traditional pre-employment drug tests. Current employees, who want to quit smoking, would get financial incentives and support.
