Coffee Club: Offensive Branding?

The future is uncertain for the name of Washington, D.C.'s pro football team. The U.S. Patent Office canceled its trademarks of the Redskins on the grounds it's "disparaging to Native Americans."

The team can continue using the familiar Redskins logo for now as the team's owners appeal the decision by the U.S. Patent Office.

It canceled six trademarks belonging to the football team, saying they are offensive to Native Americans.

The move is being called a victory for Native American communities. They have fought to have the team ditch the name saying it's a slur against its people.

The appeal process could take years. If the decision is upheld, it will be hard for the team to claim ownership of its brand, a crucial step in going after the makers of unlicensed, counterfeit merchandise.

The team will have to prove it has always used the logos, rather than relying  on official trademark registrations.
