Deadly Shooting Remains Unsolved One Year Later

Dan Nickerson, Jr. was shot and killed June 10, 2012 on the 1400 block of Mesquite St. The case remains unsolved one year later, but Abilene police say they have a few leads.

As he sits on his porch, Pilly Thomas can't help but think about  what happened a year ago. That's because he was woken up by gun shots.

"It was about 3:52 or something like that," he said. "And I went out to the back door and I looked out to see if it was somebody back there in the ally because it sounded real close."

Only to find silence.

"And I didn't see nobody. So I just went on back to bed," he explained.

It wasn't until later that day that he woke up to find the crime scene practically in his backyard.

"Then the next morning when I'd seen all them tapes and stuff around, I started to wonder what was going on," said Pilly.

Already hitting close to home for Pilly, he then found out from a neighbor that the person shot and killed was someone he knew

"He said, 'I think it's your friend, man.' And I said 'Who?' And he said Dan. And sure enough, that's who it was," Pilly explained.

And with it being so close to his house, Pilly says he can't help but wonder if Dan Nickerson was headed to his house for safety.

"It was painful because I feel he was trying to make it to my house. Whoever was after, I think they got to him before he got here," said Pilly.

A year later, still no named suspects or arrest. APD tells me that they have leads, and have questioned people who they believe know the happenings of that night. But that they won't cooperate.

But Pilly says he and the neighborhood aren't worried, because the person who they believe did it is in jail.
