No one wants to start out the new year, feeling under the weather.
"Getting the flu is hard. It's uncomfortable, and it hurts. But it is so easily treated nowadays", says Dr. David Randell, of Abilene Regional Medical Center.
But Dr. Randell says this is exactly the time of year when germs spread, and hospitals fill up.
"It's a pandemic proportion. We are seeing between five and ten patients every day", explains Dr. Randell.
There are ways to prevent the spread, you just have to keep one rule of thumb in mind.
"We call it the 'three foot rule', keep your distance! If you walk into a room and someone is coughing and hacking and they look very uncomfortable", Dr. Randell tells us.
Dr. Randell urges you to take precautions during the other 3 seasons of the year, so when cold and flu season rolls around, you won't go down easy.
"it's never too late to get a flu shot now, if you can find one. We're not giving more flu shots. But if have not had the flu, it's never too late", says Dr. Randell.
