Know Your Neighbor: Betty Bradley

ABILENE, Texas (KRBC) - Betty Bradley, the executive director for Meals on Wheels Plus in Abilene, has by and large lived in Abilene since the early 60's.

"I love the people here and I love abilene, so I stayed," she stated.

Bradley spent time doing everything from working at a watch factory to working in a hospital as a nurse. But when she started to have kids, she transitioned.

"I was a stay at home mom."

In an effort to help her kids learn service, she started to deliver meals for Meals on Wheels, which was church run at the time.

"I developed a passion for the program,"

Bradley quickly made friends with those she delivered meals to.

"The people just crept into my heart."

Later, it was decided the program needed to become community supported and Bradley was part of the committee that got the program off the ground. Soon after  she was asked to direct it.

"I never prayed so hard in my life."

She continued to mull it over until one day a passage read aloud from John caught her attention.

"Jesus asks Peter, 'Do you love me?' and Peter says, 'You know that I love you.' Then Jesus says, 'feed my sheep.'"

It was then that she realized she was being called into service.

"So I went to the board and told them I'd try it and they said they'd try me and they've been trying me for about 42 years."

Over the years the program has grown from serving 80 to serving over a thousand. And volunteers she has served beside have nothing but praise for her.
