Memorial Day Service Honors Fallen Veterans

"Today we must tell the stories of those who fought and died in freedom's cause," said Woody Gillian, as he spoke to the crowd.

Every year, we remember those service men and woman who gave their lives for us. And every year, locals gather at the Elmwood cometary to do just that.

"You know this is the one day out of the year that we stop and we honor those that paid the ultimate sacrifice," said Jimmy DeFoor, Abilene Veterans Services.

But it wasn't just to honor the military members.

"Also to honor the families. You know the families serve just like the soldiers, sailors, airmen did," explained DeFoor.

To show those families that their loved ones will never be forgotten.

"We tell those stories because those who have lost loved ones need to know that a grateful nation will always remember," said Gillian.

Whether it be today, or tomorrow or the next day.

"Even though we honor our fallen comrades today, always remember," said air for veteran Leroy Haynes. "The reason we are here to do this is because those brave men and women died."

And the reason we are here is the reason they go out and fight for us.

"Not for fame, or reward. Not for place, nor rank," said Gillian. "But to civil obedience to duty as they understood it."
