The city of Merkel may be getting a Walmart Express. According to the City Manager, a request by Walmart Real Estate was put in to rezone property next to Merkel's Subway restaurant. Right now that property is zoned as agriculture space and in order for a business to open, it must be rezoned to general business district.

Many locals say having a Walmart can take a toll on Merkel's Supermarket and Drug Store. Others want the change. They believe it could bring more people into Merkel from the surrounding towns.

Merkel's drug store released this statement:

"We are concerned about the possible negative impact it will bring to Merkel, by affecting over 8 stores in town. Between Merkel Drug and the other businesses, we employ over 60 people. If these businesses suffer or close, it will affect their families of over 150 people....
We here at Merkel Drug will continue to offer the best personalized customer service that we have been doing for over 30 years and will continue to support our local community and organizations."
