The Abilene City Council awarded a bid for a local construction company to begin working on a sidewalk project in the Cockerell area. The sidewalk will run from North 7th from Treadaway to Cockerell, and on Cockerell Drive from East Highway 80 to North 10th street.

Kathryn Walker, Principal of the Woodson Center For Excellence, says that she is thrilled for the safety that sidewalks provide. "Anytime you are a parent, you say stay on the sidewalk, don't walk in the street or don't ride your bike in the street and sidewalks just provide a natural barrier for safety for students of any age... And I think it provides a little comfort and peace of mind knowing that students are going to have a specific and designated path to get them where they need to go."

It is unclear at this time as to when the sidewalk project will begin. Justice Construction of Abilene was awarded the bid for the $238,000 project.
