State Farm is mobilizing additional claims personnel to the affected areas in central and south Texas in response to the damaging hail, straight-line winds, and some tornadic impacts occurring yesterday. State Farm regional spokesman, Gary Stephenson, said, "Thursday's storms impacted a large area from Abilene to San Antonio, however, State Farm has the largest claims force in the nation in order to be able to respond to these kinds of events. Our focus at this time, is to help our customers recover as quickly as possible."
State Farm offers the following recommendations for the reporting damage for claim coverage, and repair steps.
Contact your agent to report your claim or damage. Customers can report claims by contacting their local agent, calling 800-SF CLAIM (800-732-5246), reporting online at Statefarm.com, or by using their ‘pocket agent’ iPhone app.
For temporary repairs
If you need to cover any windows or have partial roof damage that needs immediate attention, take a few photos, and, if safe to do so, cover damaged areas with plastic, tarps, or plywood as appropriate, to prevent further potential damage to your possessions. Save receipts for expenses on any temporary repairs.
Don’t make hasty repair decisions. Talk with your agent or insurer about your claim first. Understand your coverage before making any contractor decisions.
Know whom you’re dealing with--work with people you know, or who are recommended by someone you trust. It is best to work with a local company, rather than someone from outside your area. This is especially important if there are questions or problems with the repair later.
Request proof of insurance. For repairs, hire licensed professionals who have proper liability insurance. You should not be liable for any on-the-job accident.
Don’t pay up front. Pay only after the work is satisfactorily completed, and get a receipt.
Finally, don’t commit to a contractor that says he is working for an insurance company. Insurers do not hire contractors. One other piece of advice is to not sign any document authorizing a contractor to negotiate with the insurer. A policy is a contract between the insurer and the home owner, not a third party.
