Sweetwater Businesses Looking Forward to Economic Boost From Rattlesnake Roundup

The Rattlesnake Roundup began over fifty years ago as a way to control the snake population in the Sweetwater area. Decades later, the annual Rattlesnake Roundup is expected to attract around 50,000 people from across the world. 

The Roundup is a welcomed Sweetwater tradition and many business owners say they look forward to this weekend all year. Ronald Lane, General Manager of the Holiday Inn Express in Sweetwater, explained that they are totally sold out of rooms this weekend and that people often book their rooms up to a year in advance.

Steve Holcomb, owner of the Schlotzsky's in Sweetwater, has been in business since October of 1996 and says that this is a time of year he looks forward to because of the increase in business and because of the tradition of the Roundup.

Lowell Williams Sr. owns Williams BBQ and Smoke House and is looking forward to a busy weekend. Williams moved to Sweetwater in 1958 and opened his restaurant in 1980. The eatery has been closed for the past four years because Williams was battling health problems. He explained that six months ago, he would have never dreamed that he would be able to be healthy enough to open up his restaurant for the 2014 Roundup. As of now, he plans on just being open for the Roundup weekend, but says that he may consider being open a few days each week.
