The Fourth of July weekend is a time filled with fireworks and family, and many have already hit the road to celebrate this holiday weekend. Some drivers say they take extra precautions on busy weekends like this.

"The main thing is just drive defensively," explains driver Ernest Ceballos. Another driver, Jerome Willis is traveling from Odessa to Oklahoma to visit with family and friends and is planning ahead to avoid danger. "I try to drive in the day time now, so we can get somewhere before the drinking really gets going and the partying starts."

Drunk driving is one reason that the Department of Public Safety is stepping up their patrol this weekend. "We've researched and go round and round about DWI, how to prevent it, but it never stops," explains Trooper Fred Biddle. He says that all hands will be on deck this holiday weekend to keep the roadways as safe as possible.

One traveler says he still regrets a moment of bad judgment and urges others not to make the same mistake. "Don't risk it. Me, myself I have a DUI and its caused me a lot of trouble," explains Efren Villasenor.

DPS Troopers are also asking drivers to obey the Move Over or Slow Down law especially this weekend as there will be more emergency and law enforcement pulled off to the side of the road. To learn more about the law, click here.

So as you start your fun filled holiday weekend, remember to stay alert, as the drivers around you are hoping for a great weekend too.
