Chief Deputy Shane Baxter, with the Fisher County Sheriff's Office, says over twenty horses were found malnourished and in terrible shape. There was no sign of any food on the property the horses were kept on.
Baxter had an arrest warrant issued for the owner, who is believed to be living in Knox County. The ribs of many of these horses and several of their back bones were noticeably sticking out.
Baxter says one of the horses was put down on Friday, and another was found with a broken leg. Today a group of men were penning up half the horses, the ones in the worst shape were taken to a veterinarian in Rotan.
One neighbor told KTAB he thinks the horses have been neglected all winter.
Chief Deputy Baxter says once taken into custody, the owner will face animal cruelty charges. The Fisher County Sheriff's Office is not releasing the name of the owner at this time.
