Students around the Big Country are preparing to get back to school.

While many parents are used to checking off the lists every year, some things have changed.

One Abilene parent tells us they no longer have to purchase notebooks or construction paper because of the new technology in classrooms and many students getting their own laptops to work on and even take home.

Regardless of fewer items, parents are still spending more.

The U.S. Census estimates $8.5 billion was spent last year for school supplies and research predicts that cost will go up 12 percent this year.
