The Abilene Public Library is home to thousands of stories including the ones that aren't bound to the pages of a book.

"I retired in 2003. I stayed home for 6 months and then I thought I got to have something to do part-time," says Jacobs.

Jacobs set out on the next chapter of her life.

"There was an opening here at the library for a part-time person just 20 hours a week. I interviewed and was hired for that position," Jacobs says.

She helped bring the pages to life during story time for the children, "I did that for three years and then my husband was ill and I stopped working. But then after he passed away, I decided I needed something to do to get me out and away from from the house, and that's when I started volunteering."

She's been volunteering for four years. She doesn't take home a pay check any more.

"It's fine because I am gaining from it the ability to be out in the community, to meet new people," Jacobs adds.

She's in charge of important library duties, "I do whatever they need but primarily, I look for materials that are lost."

It's a task that requires a lot of patience.

She's also in charge of what she calls reading the shelves. She makes sure all of the books are in order.

Jacobs says, "Of course, with the children's sections particularly, the little ones tend to just stick them in anywhere. So, that's an important task also in getting the books back where they belong on the shelves."

She volunteers her time so that library staff can focus on their service to the public. She loves being part of the library family and doesn't plan on checking out anytime soon.

"It's good for me. At this point in my life, that's what I need, says Jacobs.

Marilyn Jacobs has more than two decades of experience working in education. She was a teacher and worked at the central office within the Abilene Independent School District.
