The family of a 22 year veteran of the U.S. Marines, who recently passed, gave us that chance. The late 78-year-old David Carol Andrews was laid to rest Friday morning and his family allowed us the honor to be there.
As the rain came down Friday morning and the flag was flying at half staff over the Veterans Cemetery in Abilene, the family of Andrews gathered to say their goodbyes.
Andrews served three tours of duty in Vietnam and one tour in Korea. A poem was read during his funeral with full military honors. It spoke volumes to his friends and family gathered at the cemetery.
Below is just a portion of the poem called "A Soldier Died Today":
"But we will hear his tails no longer, for ol' Dave has passed away, and the world is a little poorer, for a soldier died today."
"And the world will not know his passing although a soldier died today."
"Or the ordinary fella, who at times of war and strife, goes off to serve his country and offers up his life then at lease give him homage at the ending of his life, perhaps just a little head line in the paper would say, our country is in mourning for a soldier died today."
