Numbers show competitors joining adventure races have increased 30% in the past three years.

But this is not your typical 5k race.

Courses take it to an extreme with racers jumping over fire and running through electrified wires. Emergency doctors say electrical injuries can life threatening. There have also been reports of burns from fire and in one race manure in the mud made racers sick.

Participants sign waivers acknowledging there is risk of injury and death and those who walk away from the races have serious bragging rights. While it's hard to get your body ready for adventure races, cross training is a good way to build endurance and strength.
