Treating serious skin infections can mean days in the hospital for some patients, but researchers say this new drug could prevent or shorten hospital stays. Dr. Ralph Corey, Professor of Medicine, Infectious Diseases at Duke University School of Medicine says, "You can be discharged from the ER to go back home and gradually cure the infection over the next 7-10 days." Researchers say another benefit to only needing one treatment: patients are less likely to miss a dose.
The Medicines Company funded the study and have submitted the drug to the FDA. Researchers say there were minor side effects, including nausea and headaches.
