ACU A Cappella Chorus to Travel to New York City for a Memorial Day Concert

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - This weekend the Abilene Christian University A Cappella Chorus will travel to New York City to perform a Memorial Day concert at Lincoln Center.

Beginning Friday, May 26 through Tuesday, May 30, the ACU chorus will travel to New York City where they will be joined by the Texas Tech University choir and orchestra. The two combined choirs, along with the orchestra, will then start in on three days of rehearsals.

The invitation to perform at Lincoln Center came a year ago, and the ACU chorus wasted no time in preparing.  The chorus has been preparing Johannes Brahms' German Requiem, and has already had one chance to perform the piece with the Abilene Philharmonic. The Texas Tech University Choir will be performing Samuel Barber's Agnus Dei.

The two selections are appropriate for Memorial Day in that both are often associated with times of mourning. The Agnus Dei is Barber's reworking of his own Adagio for Strings, a piece often played during times of great national mourning.  Brahms' Requiem seeks to provide comfort to those who have lost loved ones.

The ACU A Cappella Chorus consists of twenty-three students from both music and non-music majors. The chorus, under the direction of Dr. Jeff Goolsby will be joined by Dr. Matt Roberson, the chair of the music department at ACU.

Apart from rehearsing, the students and faculty will have the opportunity to explore the city and maybe even catch a Broadway show.

In an email, Dr. Goolsby had this to say: "This is an amazing opportunity for ACU students to perform in one of the premiere concert venues in the world. The opportunity to perform with our colleagues at TTU is also special, to sing alongside a top collegiate music program like TTU is an honor."
