2017 Crime: Rape rate rose in Abilene, other crimes trending down

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - Abilene police released 2017 crime statistics Thursday, showing the rate of rape increased while other crimes rates slowed across the City.

There were 4 murders in 2017, a mere half of the murders that occurred in 2016.

Rape, on the other hand, increased from 2016 to 2017 from 69 reports to 94. Police Chief Stan Standridge attributes at least some of this increase to a change in technology and a shift in how sexual assaults are reported.

Violent crime as a whole, which includes numbers for murder, rape, and aggravated assault, rose just over 8% in 2017.

Property crime, which includes numbers for burglary, theft, and auto theft, decreased as a whole by just over 8%, with the largest decrease happening in reported Thefts.

There were 17.3% less thefts reported in Abilene in 2017 than in 2016. Chief Standridge believes this might not be an accurate portrayal of the property crime rate because APD recently shifted to an online reporting system for minor property crimes, which many residents aren't using.

Overall, Abilene's crime rate dropped just over 8% in 2017, a trend Chief Standridge hopes continues.
