ABILENE, Texas (KTAB) - The 36th Annual Winter Circuit Cutting is going on through the 31st and as part of the bond passed by the city of Abilene in November of 2016, the horses are getting to use some brand new stalls and soon will be moving to a new facility.
What started as an idea in Vegas, event producer, Carolyn Gully said she didn't know if it would work.
"There was four of us and each of us had a couple of children and we come home and we put the kids to work," Gully said.
Gully's daughter, Coleta Manahan said her first job was assigning stalls at the Winter Circuit. 36 years later and the kids are still all involved in the cutting world.
"I'm excited about that because it's been a good life for them," Gully said.
The annual Winter Circuit Cutting is a huge event for the city of Abilene, bringing in more than $500,000 and approximately 1000 people.
"I know we got every motel full. We've got restaurants. I mean it's just amazing," Gully said.
And while the other couple who helped start the event has passed away, it's still a family affair.
"When there's a tragedy everybody pitches in and helps that family. When there's good times every body celebrates together. It's wonderful," Manahan said.
But it's about to change locations.
"By this time next year they should have the new facility, the equine facility finished where we will no longer cut in the Colosseum we will have our show in the new facility," Manahan said.
"I'l be the first to tell you that we've needed this a long time," Gully said.
And they think it will help this event continue to grow.
