6 Big Country school districts closed due to illness

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - At least 6 Big Country school districts will be closed Friday due to an illness outbreak.

5 school districts - Gorman, Rising Star, Cisco, Eastland, and Santa Anna - plan to resume class Monday, and the 6th school district - Colorado City - will remain closed until Tuesday.

Colorado City recorded 206 absences Thursday, accounting for 23% of the entire student body, according to Superintendent Reggie Spencer. 19% of teachers were absent as well.

The closures are due to a rise in illnesses such as the flu, the stomach bug, and strep throat.

Officials at all 6 districts are working to sterilize classrooms and campuses in wake of the outbreak.

Abilene ISD is also dealing with district-wide illness. Last week, the number of flu-related absences tripled to nearly 500, prompting administration to increase cleaning and disinfecting efforts.

Rotan ISD and Hermleigh ISD previously made the decision to cancel school this month due to a large number of students and staff calling in sick.
