Abilene community comes together to purchase new bike stolen from "Granddaddy"

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB) -  In true Big Country fashion, many community members have come together to help 90-year-old Ross Blasingame.

He is the Abilene man who's bicycle was stolen from his front porch on East North 20th St.

Blasingame is known to many as "granddaddy" and used to bike for exercise and to get around town to grocery shop or visit his many friends.

"The man needed help, he needed the community's help," stated Sarge Haney. "He's 90-years-old. That's what it's about. God says help and we're here to help our fellow man and this man needed it."

Many of you felt compelled to help after learning his bicycle was his only transportation.

."He's getting his bicycle. I can tell you that right now, he's getting a new bicycle," added Haney, who helped organized a donation drop off at Biketown in Abilene.

More than $600 was raised to help purchase a new bike. The left over money will be sent to a mission in Africa to help blind children. It's a mission near and dear to Blasingame's heart.
