Abilene crossing guards see problem with crosswalk violators

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB) - Abilene Police have made it known they plan to beef up patrol when it comes to school zones.

They'll be looking for violations like texting and driving and even speeding.

There's also another issue they will be monitoring. Drivers who don't stop for students walking across crosswalks.

The City of Abilene traffic services says it's a problem its crossing guards are already noticing this school year.

"They do end up stopping but they usually stop in the crosswalk or stop and then try to inch forward through the crosswalk," stated James Rogge. "They just don't understand that stop means stop."

There have been no reports of children getting hit this year but there were several last year.

The men and women who man these crosswalks are trained to first and foremost keep the kids safe.

"That's why I try to get out there first to stop the traffic then the kids can cross," Radford Wright said.

He's been a crossing guard for the City of Abilene for five years.

"I don't want any of the kids to get hurt,"Wright added.

Neither does the city.

This offense does warrant a traffic ciation with a fine up to $200.
