Abilene High School Names New Principal

ABILENE, Texas (PRESS RELEASE) - Longtime Abilene ISD administrator Michael Garcia is returning to Abilene High School, this time as the campus principal.

Garcia, a former Abilene High assistant principal and currently the principal at Martinez Elementary School, will take the reins at AHS at the conclusion of the 2016-17 school year.

Current Abilene High principal Robert Morrison will complete the school year as AHS principal and then assume another administrative role in AISD to be announced at a later date.

“We believe Mr. Garcia is a great fit as principal at Abilene High School,” Superintendent Dr. David Young said in making the announcement. “As campus principal at both Jane Long and Martinez elementary schools and in his time as an assistant at Abilene High, he has shown exemplary leadership skills on a daily basis. He is a wonderful motivator of both students and staff and builds effective relationships with parents and community members.

“We appreciate Mr. Morrison’s leadership this year at Abilene High School,” added Dr. Young, “and I know that his talent and abilities will continue to add value to the students and staff of our district in his new position. He will be working closely with Mr. Garcia over the next couple of months to facilitate a smooth transition for students, staff and parents. While Mr. Garcia will remain principal at Martinez Elementary through the end of the school year, the process to determine his successor will begin immediately.”

A native of Anson, Garcia began his AISD career 27 years ago as a computer literacy teacher and coach at Franklin Middle School. He entered administration as an assistant principal at AHS in 2003 and was named in 2009 as the Region 14 Outstanding Principal by the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals (TASSP). His first head principal opportunity came later in 2009 when he was named to lead Jane Long Elementary. After Long closed as an elementary campus in 2015, he became principal at Martinez. Garcia is a 1990 graduate of Abilene Christian University and earned a Master’s of Education from Tarleton State University in 1997. He and his wife, Maribel, have three sons currently attending AISD schools, including one at AHS.
