Abilene Historian, Jack North, being honored at McMurry University

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - Known for keeping Abilene's history thriving, Jack North, 73, and his wife, Sandie, will be honored at a special reception at McMurry University.

This ceremony honoring the '65 McMurry alumnus and his wife is being held in appreciation for their donation of an extensive slide collection on Abilene's history. 

For many years, North has played an active role in the preservation of Abilene's history. He has been a sought-after speaker for the history of this town and has published books. His priceless collection preserving Abilene's history in pictures includes over 4000 slides.

North was born on Nov. 17, 1943, in El Campo, TX. He graduated from Abilene High School in 1962, and went on to earn his BBA from McMurry College in 1965. He then continued his education while attending the University of Texas Law Shool and graduated from the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science in 1967. Outside of his education, North enjoyed pursuing his many talents and interests including being a commercial pilot, a licensed Texas real estate agent and insurance agent. 

This Abilene Historian is also known for his active leadership role in the community. North has served as the president of the Better Business Bureau and the Abilene Philharmonic Association. He also held positions with the Taylor County Board of Health, Abilene Regional Airport Board and the Military Affairs Committee of the Abilene Chamber of Commerce. For 29 years, North was an honorary commander of the 28th Squadron at Dyess AFB and served as a chairman of the honorary commanders committee.

North and his wife own North's Funeral Home, Abilene's oldest family-owned funeral home.

The ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 16 at the McMurry Jay-Rollins Library.
