Abilene ISD Board of Trustees Appoint Tim de la Vega to Fill Vacant Seat

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - In a meeting held this evening, the Abilene Independent School District board of trustees voted to appoint Tim de la Vega to fill the vacancy left by Jeff Arrington.

During Monday nights board meeting, Tim de la Vega was appointed to the Place 1 seat of the board of trustees. This did not come without some dissent from the community.

While the appointment of Vega was supposed to be at the top of the agenda, it was pushed back until later in the meeting to allow for public input.

Members of the Hispanic Leadership Council and Lulac both spoke of their wishes for the vacant seat, calling for the postponing of the appointment until a better process for choosing the candidate could be enacted.

The members called for a more transparent and open process. Their hope was for a process where residents could apply for the seat and then have the most qualified candidate chosen.

Their concern is specifically for someone from the Cooper district, as there is currently no one on the board from within the Cooper boundaries.

Three board members voted in favor of Vega, while one dissented and two abstained.

Tim de la Vega immediately took his place on the board after his appointment.
