Abilene ISD campus names rich in history

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB) - The Abilene Independent School District is rich in its history and that includes the naming  of schools.

There are three schools who are named after Confederate soldiers.

Lee Elementary is named after Robert E. Lee. Johnston Elementary is named after Sidney Johnston and Jackson Elementary is named after Stonewall Jackson.

"The school board is always the one who ultimately selects or decides upon the names that schools have," stated Joe Humphrey, construction coordinator for A.I.S.D.

These schools were named in the 1960's when these campuses were constructed.

Although the figures these campuses are named after are causing controversy in other parts of he country, school officials say they don't see it as a problem here.

"We really don't hear a lot about this," added Humphrey. "Of course, it's not something we play up or portray. It's been a relatively non-controversial thing here in Abilene.

Humphrey says he doesn't feel like A.I.S.D. will look into changing the names of these campuses anytime soon.
